Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist

Letting in the Light

A panoramic stained glass of light and color fills the upper sanctuary wall behind the altar. Evocative effects are created by the use of specialty dichroic glass, which shifts hue as the outside light transitions from morning to evening and sunny to cloudy.

The theme of the windows was inspired by the locale of the church, just a few blocks from the coastline of Monterey Bay.  The sparkle of light bouncing off ocean waves became a metaphor for the authentic dialogue between two entities…a meeting which reveals the vibrant spark of the divine. Two curved lines forming an open circle are the wings of the Spirit, embracing creation.

The windows were enthusiastically received by the congregation, as expressed in the note below from one of the members:

“Oh Susan!  I can’t say enough about how delighted everyone was. And I think as they see how dynamically the color active glass takes the window from two to three dimensions they will continue to be surprised and pleased.”

The Narthex Cross
In reference to a classical Episcopal symbol, Susan created a stained glass circle and cross as entrance to the church and backdrop for a carved statue of St. John the Baptist.
